Five months. Seventeen weeks. 478 days. In this amount of time, I have been able to balance school, sport, family, work, and friends with the responsibilities of ISM (Independent Study and Mentor ship Program). In this time in ISM, I have been given the opportunity to develop me own ideas and projects in regards to my field of choice. I have chosen to study Dietetics this year alongside my Mentor, Ms. Casey Bonano. I’ve pursued an Original Work that merges the personality aspect of treatment (through the Enneagram) and the Clinical side of treatment (through the placement of Eating Disorders), to understand how different personalities may react with particular stressors, peace, or anxiety which can benefit the professional dietitian with the proper knowledge to frame a treatment according to the reaction of the client, as well as, how to communicate and motivate a client as efficiently as possible. This work was very interesting and important to carry with my through my future career. Furthermore, I have observed face to face sessions under the leadership of my mentor which has taught me plentiful. This class alone, outside of my personal exploration, has taught me professionalism, communication, interviews, networking, online presence, and even dress. This showcase gave the the opportunity to finally present all that I have done.

The 2019 Research Showcase was held at the Star Ford Center in Frisco, Texas. Every Frisco ISD ISM student attended the event and developed a presentation board to visualize all that they have completed. It was a free, open event for the public to come and go and support the high school students. It was really nice to see all my family and friends go out of their way to come and see what I have done and support my work. The adults and other strangers that walked by were always very intrigued and full of questions, allowing me to elaborate on my work. All of the guests were very positive and encouraging. It is times when others show interest and pride in the work you’ve done that truly make the work worth it. It was humbling to be able to gain the respect of real professionals through the event and the program.

This event also allowed for us, the students, to tour the stands of other schools and students and see all that our peers have also worked so hard to accomplish. It is so interesting to see the creativity that some minds harness, or the level sophistication that teenagers really can be. ISM is a remarkable program because every student is so bright and driven that they understand what it takes to get to where we are. So when interacting with other students, they are kind and conversational, and impressed. Each human is so different, and those differences make the world so connected.

In conclusion, The Research Showcase, was just a stepping stone for the Final Presentation at the end of our year in ISM. I am pleased with where my current research has brought me and I am so excited to see where my new product and research takes me.
