Original Work Completion and Summary
Objective/Purpose:The original work is centered around the idea that individual tendencies can attribute to particular eating disorders or can make some more prone to a specific pattern of eating and/or relationship development with food. The goal is to develop statistical evidence to prove the tendencies of the 9 Enneagram types within a high school population sample, as well as, if the theoretical Enneagram research correlates to the experimental high school tendencies.
Materials: I used the Enneagram free type exam, and a designed questionnaire based on several eating disorder examinations (SCOFF, EAT-26, NEDA screening exam) as well as background information survey questions to determine the state and information of each participant. I used the EAT-26 eating disorder screening exam, using the responses to conduct a psychological exam of the state of the patient to see how many participants could be eligible for a medically diagnosable eating disorder. I compared my data with the information from the published “Enneagram of Eating” and the “Intuitive Eating” books.
Description of Process: My population of 50 Liberty High School students have taken the same Enneagram test provided for them, and with their scores I moved forward by surveying them with a questionnaire carefully articulated to address basic information, as well as, integration of tests such as EAT (Eating Attitude Test), EDI (Eating Disorder Inventory), NEDA screening exam, and SCOFF questions to assess the quality of their nutritional health, as well as, tendencies they have acquired through their development. I will use the results of the questionnaire and compare the types per responses to try and identify a correlation between the two. Once this research is completed and translated, I will use the information to develop a written program per type to provide information in regards to what they are, why they are, and how to benefit their lives because of who they are, as well as, resources or diets tailored to their personality and lifestyle needs. I also proved or differentiated that accuracy of the Enneagram Types to the actual characteristics of the participant in High school.
Utilization of Higher-Level Thinking Skills: In my Original Work, I utilized higher-level thinking because I used a already higher level analysis of the human personality to decipher my own research to prove the correlation between different types of people with eating habits. This ability to judge and analyze research and turn it into results that the applicants can use to develop a type of mindfulness specific to their personal tendencies is a higher level goal thus requires high level of skills. The development of my own questionnaire that applied to the lifestyles of high school students also required knowledge of the required terminology and surveying requirements, as well as, a deeper understanding of the situations of teenagers. Lastly, being able to relate a characteristic of a nutritional habit to the personal relationship within a person required insight and higher level thinking.
Results: To see an in depth conclusion of my research and its comparison to the two publications, please refer to the Full Conclusions paper. In short, I realized that a lot of the Types described in the Enneagram book match the results that I interpreted in my own research. Only the Enneagram type 7 seemed a little off the responses of the students. Five students passed the ED examination with a score higher than 20, and four students stated that they had an ED, however zero of the participants have been treated for any type of ED. Three out of the five ED responses also stated that they experience depression.
Conclusions/Interpretations: Refer to Full Conclusion paper for detailed conclusions (on a separate blog).
Application/Meaning: As a result of my survey and conclusions, I have realized that as teenagers, everyone experiences a feeling of insecurity or purely live unhealthy habits because “we are kids, we can”. Furthermore, an average of 3.65 out of 5 feel it is important for other people's support in helping them sustain a healthy diet. With that information, dietitians and even lifestyle influencers or athletes can outwardly encourage and share their journey to health or the things they eat or do in order to uplift, encourage, and sustain others who need that motivation and example. In addition, for the high school population, a lot of the eating habits that have been developed are as a result of the example that parents and siblings have set for the child. That example can encourage the imitation of that eating lifestyle or can cause the adolescent to oppose the eating style of parents and siblings due to many affecting factors.
